Los Angeles, California

What I love about brewery taprooms in America compared to Australia, is they are full on brewpubs with plenty of sitting, a sports bar or music club feel and huge kitchens with a great variety of share plates or main meals.

This was just up the road from my AirBnB in Venice, Los Angeles. I’ve never ventured too much into their beers in the past but after this visit, I’m a big fan. The taproom is known as the Propagator. A lot of their tap room only release beers are brewed there including their barrel aged range of sours and imperial stouts.

What I love about brewery taprooms in America compared to Australia, is they are full on brewpubs with plenty of sitting, a sports bar or music club feel and huge kitchens with a great variety of share plates or main meals. It’s easy to come down and have a feed and a few drinks over a few hours on any given evening. The Propagator has a great aesthetic. Stainless steel and discarded barrels. Booths around the outside and tables in the middle. There is also merchandise stand and takeaways fridge. Plus you can always get a growler of your favourite tap brew to go as well.

As I like to sample everything, I ended up with three different tasting flights (tasting paddles)

Flight #1

Unfiltered DBA – DBA but unfiltered

Pivo Pils – crisp easy drinking pilsner

Mind Haze – typical hazy IPA

Union Jack IPA – standard IPA

Flight #2

Pink Boots With The Fur – great juicy NEIPA

Retrograde Red IPA – solid red IPA

The Seventh Nail – complex sour beer

Parabajava – Coffee infused Russian Imperial Stout. I gave it 5 stars on Untappd and woke up the next day thinking about this beer. One of the best RIS I have ever had.

Flight #3

Rosalie – Rosè style sour

Nitro Merlin – Nitro dry stout

Maple Parabola – Maple Imperial Stout

Sucaba – another Imperial Stout

The stand out was the Parabajava. Even now writing this, I miss that beer. So good. Coffee and vanilla notes. Big boozy taste. Delicious.

Golden Road Brewing

Located in Glendale, which is about half hour north of Venice, Golden Road is great location for dinner and drinks with friends. Helps when one of your friends recently begun working at the brewery and was able to lead me through what to sample among the many beers on offer. With a large indoor bar and seating area and an outdoor area that surrounds the main taproom, there’s plenty of room but will still get fairly busy on any given night of the week. The food was good and the beer was great too. Their chicken wings were outstanding and the burgers look good also. Well worth stopping in for a few hours for a bite to eat and few beers if you get the chance.

Flight #1

329 Lager – simple craft beer Lager

Hefeweizen – standard Hefe

Get Up Offa That Brown – American Brown Ale

El Nitro – dry Irish Stout

Flight #2

Wolf Among The Weeds – hoppy West Coast IPA

Wolf Pup Session IPA – a session version of the Wolf Among The Weeds

Ride On IPA – mild flavoured IPA

Palisades Pineapple – Pineapple hazy pale ale

Bonus taster!

Spicy Mango Cart – chilli infused Mango Pale Ale

Look, not going to lie, had an accidentally big day drinking around Glendale before heading to Golden Roads so my recollection on some of these beers are not as clear as it should be. I remember the Palisade Pineapple and the Spicy Mango Cart being standouts. Big fruity flavours and light malt backbones. Easy drinking for a warm spring day in Los Angeles.
