Carlton United Breweries – KB Lager

Carlton United Breweries in Melbourne, Victoria

Tasting Notes

Light amber gold in colour with a solid white foamy head. Sweet, biscuity aromas. No real hop aroma to speak of. Malty flavours with a little bit of earthy bitterness. The return of the mighty KB lager. A staple beer in Australia in the 70s and 80s. Affectionately known as kids beer because of its sweetness. I’m not detecting much sweetness on the palette but it certainly tastes like a Tooheys New or Carlton Draught. This is a beer you would expect to find on tap at some outback hotel (likely called Royal Hotel) where this and XXXX gold are the only options on tap. The publican has been there for 40 years and the food is your choice of a tough bit of steak with chips or a deep fried chicken schnitzel with chips. If you don’t want beer you could have a Bundy and coke. Or drink lemon squash. Otherwise, chew your way schooners of this. It’s basic beer and it’s not the best but when you’re limited on options, it’ll do to quench your thirst on a hot, dusty Saturday afternoon.

I drink beer. And occasionally I'll write about it. But mostly, I drink beer.
